15 computer science students from Zurich explored China for 3 weeks in October 2017 to continue their education. Their stay was an unforgettable and unique experience. With the support of the Berufsbildungsfonds des Mittelschul- und Berufsbildungsamtes (MBA), 15 ICT students from Zurich had the opportunity to gain an insight into Shanghai’s working world and get to know the fastest growing economy in the world. They helped local start-up companies with their expertise and were able to benefit from other approaches and working methods. The participants were assigned to one of three group projects according to their abilities and preferences. Whether they wrote a driving analysis programme, configured temperature sensors or developed a social media strategy, they experienced the everyday life of a start-up company and adapted to new ways of working. Another great realisation was that, compared to school life, time is money in such a rapidly growing economy. The local teams were impressed by the knowledge, morale and precision of the participants. Besides working in a co-working space for technical companies, excursions and activities were organised to introduce the young people to the rich Chinese culture and its peculiarities. The Crash Course in Mandarin showed the complexity of the Chinese language. Another success was a visit to the city of Hangzhou near Shanghai followed by the Alibaba headquarters and the Nihub company, which was founded by a Swiss company. Another must was of course the West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether for learners or local entrepreneurs, the project was a success and an unforgettable experience for both sides. This is also shown by the feedback of the participating students, as ten out of 15 can imagine returning for an internship in China.
